Permissions & security

Add-ons run inside a browser, where people do their banking, email and work. Security comes before features.

Permission model

Planned

  • Every extension and plugin declares the permissions it needs in its manifest.
  • Ovra shows those permissions before install, in plain language.
  • Sensitive permissions — reading every site, browsing history, downloads — are asked for separately and can be revoked at any time in Settings.
  • Add-ons can’t access other add-ons’ data, Ovra’s saved data, or files on the Mac unless the user picks them.

Planned

Add-ons listed in the Ovra gallery are reviewed before they appear and again when they’re updated. Review checks that the add-on does what it says, asks only for permissions it needs, doesn’t load remote code, and doesn’t collect data without saying so. Add-ons installed from a file aren’t reviewed, and Ovra says so when you install one.

Signed updates

Available

Ovra updates are signed with an EdDSA key and verified by Sparkle before they’re installed, so only genuine releases can update Ovra.

Reporting a vulnerability

Available

If you find a security problem in Ovra, don’t open a public issue. Email contact@kilianbalaguer.me with:

  • what you found and its impact
  • steps to reproduce
  • the Ovra and macOS versions you tested

We’ll reply as soon as we can, keep you updated while we fix it, and credit you in the release notes if you’d like.
